test
David Hiltbrand: Hello, Idol fans. It's time for our weekly Idol chat. I am joined this week by Inquirer columnist Annette John-Hall. So Annette, what did you think of last night?
Annette John-Hall: Pretty good, overall. Best performances of the season. I really dug Lulu. David: The judges were definitely amped up. So was the little crying girl. Annette: Ahhh, the crying girl. She wouldn't stop, did she? And then they trotted her onstage, and Simon talked about her. That was cruel. David: She started crying even before they were singing. Maybe it was an allergy. One of our readers Ashley asks, "Could Sanjaya have been any cuter?" Annette: I can envision a Sanjaya haircut, just like Jennifer Aniston had "The Rachel." Neither one can sing though. David: Ouch! Randy said Sanjaya "came out of his shell." Reminded me of a turtle. But he did raise his voice singing the Kinks. That's an improvement. Until now all he did was whisper. And yes, Ashley, he was cute. Annette: Whose performances did you like best? I thought Blake Lewis' beat-boxing, moon-walking "Time of the Season" was the bomb! But Ryan Seacrest needed to go somewhere and sit down when he tried to sing. What was THAT about??!! David: I really don't know. I guess Jordin Sparks impressed me most. But it was odd how much bigger she was than Ryan Seacrest. In fact, one of y=our readers, Michael asks: "What's the deal with Ryan? Is he 4'11 tall? Does he have a tiny head? Why do most of the contestants tower over him? Annette: I thought the same thing. He's so much tinier in dimension than about else. Is he a Munchkin? What if this vote-in campaign gets Sanjaya to the top 5? I wonder if they'll have to revamp the voting process? David: Now it can be revealed. Both Seacrest and his former co-host Brian Dunkleman came from the same place. But Dunkelman had to go back to the Island of Umpah Lumpahs. Annette: Ha! And what about the favorites, LaKisha and Melinda? How'd you think they did last night? David: Let me get to Sanjaya first. One of our readers, Dave says, Sanjaya is definitely the product of votefortheworst.com. I think he's got fans as well. Very young fans but old enough to dial. And what makes you think the results are dictated by votes anyway? I think Idol makes up the results it wants. So unless they think Sanjaya will sell records, he can't win. Annette: Good point. But that crying girl looked like she was planted there for Sanjaya -- but she couldn't turn the faucet off when the others performed too. Annette: Hey Paula Abdul got a record deal. Stranger things have happened. David: So true. As for LaKisha, I liked the way she sang but I agreed with Simon that it was a little too seniorish for American Idol (Of course they're singing 45-year-old songs anyway. What's next? Bing Crosby night?) But I'm tiring of Melissa. Yeah, she has a great voice, head and shoulders above the rest, but she bores me to tears. I couldn't imagine going to see her in concert, could you? Annette: Nope. Unless she opened for Prince or Stevie Wonder. I actually thought the old-head Brit coaches -- Lulu and Peter Noone gave good advice. That Lulu is Florence Henderson with an edge. ....Who surprised you? David: I agree. I was impressed with Lulu and Peter's advice. Until now Barry Manilow had been the best coach. Maybe they should appoint these two permanently. Or give them their own show. Haley Scarnato was the shocker, but only because she was shaking her groove thangs. Annette: Groove thangs indeed. Big Al asks who we'd pay to see in concert. At this point? Maybe Jordin and LaKisha. The rest would have to show me more. I think poor Phil Stacey's tanking big-time. Annette: And poor Gina! David: I've seen most of the big winners in concert over the years. Kelly Clarkson came the closest to being a headliner. And I guess Daughtry would hold a stage. Maybe Carrie Underwood for country fans. From this year? Not one of them. I'd throw them all out and start over. Annette: Really? What bugs you? No stage presence? You mean you wouldn't pay to see Chris Sligh? David: Ha! Not unless he was fixing my computer. Did you know he was an evangelical Christian? Attended Bob Jones University? Annette: I thought I sensed a hollow look in his eye. Let's face it David, none of them are Elliott Yamen *sigh* David: True. I guess my problem is so many don't have good voices. I thought both Chris Richardson and Blake Lewis sounded really sketchy last night. And the ones who can sing: Stephanie, LaKisha, Jordin, and Melinda, simply don't move me. What does that leave? Who do you think gets the axe tonight? Annette: Hmm. Sanjaya should but he won't. Probably Phil, if viewers vote by Simon's critique. I hope Gina. Annette: Fantasia Lives! David: You are wise, Annette. I would put Phil out but I'll stick with my prediction: Chris Sligh. (although I wouldn't get comfortable if I were Gina or Stephanie either). We'll know soon enough. That concludes another breathless round of Idol chat. Thanks for joining us. Thursday, September 21, 2006

Miami Arrest Part of Reason Saints Unloaded Stallworth?
The Eagles "got a hell of deal'' in trading for receiver Donte Stallworth, says ex-teammate and friend Joe Horn. "He is a playmaker and his ability is undeniable," said Eagles d-lineman Darren Howard, who played with Stallworth on the Saints and in college. "Stallworth can flat-out fly," says Ron Jaworski. So would did the Saints let a deep threat go for so little? One factor might be character issues hardly mentioned by these first reports:
In March, Stallworth was jailed in Miami Beach, and his Bentley was towed, after he was charged with "resisting arrest without violence," according to newspaper reports. After being pulled over for expired tags and giving an officer his driver's license, Stallworth allegedly tried to drive off. The report is quoted as saying: "Defendant then stated this was going to cost us a lot of money, and that he would have our jobs. Defendant further stated he knew the chief of police, and that we would be hearing from his lawyer." (Wonder if by "lawyer," Stallworth meant his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.) Could find no word on the case's final outcome. The Saints, who reportedly tried to deal Stallworth during the draft, were apparently also concerned about erratic performances, nagging injuries and lateness for meetings. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune: "He would alternate between 140-yard receiving games and zero-catch games, sometimes struggling with dropped balls and/or other mental errors. ... He was chastised on occasion by both coaching staffs for arriving late for meetings. ... The biggest setback, however, came when he missed almost the entire offseason program this year because of arthroscopic shoulder surgery, then missed part of training camp with a minor groin injury. He was unable to adjust quickly enough to Payton's new offense to solidify his place in the starting lineup. " The article also states, however: "He was not a bad character guy -- in fact, he was one of the most well-liked teammates in the locker room." "He knows in his heart why he got traded," Horn told the New Orleans paper. "So he has to take that with him and take it to Philadelphia and be a better person, be a better receiver, be better than he was last year." His advice to Stallworth: Tell McNabb "you're going to work. You have to get there and learn that playbook and make plays and let Donovan and Coach Reid know that you're there to take care of business."
